Toyota is offering a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! on the 2020 Land Cruiser. It costs a couple grand and has assorted small appearance tweaks that are hardly worth mentioning, whee ls, and a fucking instagram overlanding douchebro safari rack. But it also includes these badges on the D-pillars, which totally make the package worth buying.

Those are pretty sweet.  I wonder if Toyota will just sell them to anybody.

The rack was such a stupid add on. It’ s just a bog standard Yakima Megawarrior basket. The bronze standard (if that) for roof racks.  At least partner with Gobi or something to offer a cool looking and functional rack.

Looks good in photos, but I’d have to see it under the lighting conditions of my garage to know for sure...

Maybe Ward wants to do a one-off “ICON signature” rack for them?

That’s the kind of stuff his shop is great at.

It also comes with the same comically bad Dunlop Grandtrek AT23 OE tires as every other Land Cruiser, which despite the AT in the name are plain old highway all-seasons.

I’d like to give Toyota some credit here, but this is a seriously phoned in effort. The wheels are standard TRD units, the badge is just a straight 40-60 series badge plopped on there and the roof rack is an off-the-shelf Yakima.

At least my 40th anniversary had unique body colors, two tone leather, multiple badges (including a numbered one), embroidered floor matts, and some features that weren’t standard.  Plus you could still order options.

He tried to get Toyota to give this project to his shop, but I’m guessing that his ideas of “doing literally anything ” were too radical.

I don't know if you can see it in the picture but the Landcruiser we parked next to has a 60th anniversary badge.

This one deletes the running boards and third row seats, adds bronze accent stitching to the remaining seats, and swaps in a...wait for it... black headliner.

Heh. yeah. His original FJ Cruiser concept at least broke new ground while being suitably retro. Wonder what he’d have done on a full-size Cruiser?

BTW , we’re finally doing the Utah trip with my ‘64 FJ40 next week. I’d like to post some pics to Oppo, but had forgotten that I don’t have Author Rights on Oppo... is there someone I can PM to get on?

The headliner thing is dumb, as Toyota historically doesn’t have a great stock of their headliners so in 20 years when people will want to actually wheel with these they will be impossible to find in black.

I f I was buying a brand new special edition Land Cruiser (and I wish I was) , yeah, I guess I’d want something fancier...but I think that might actually be more poseur-y and less practical than a humble Yakima rack. Let me stick up a little for Yakima racks ...they’re certainly nothing fancy but the interchangeability of all the components at a reasonable price point is awfully convenient . Not everybody needs a completely custom safari setup. I switch between basket, ski, and bike attachments , can add ski racks without removing the basket, and can throw my parents’ kayak racks on there easily as well. As for the basket, I put camping stuff in it when I’m camping and overflow stuff up there on road trips where the dogs take up too much space in the cargo area. It does what it’s supposed to do . And because it’s not custom, w hen I sold my FJ80, my rack came along to my 4th-gen 4Runner (albeit without the more model-specific towers) , and when I sold that, it came along to my 5th-gen, no new parts needed.

M aybe. This is in Mongolia and Toyota sells a crazy amount of Landcruisers here. But of course grey market ones are popular as well.

What’s wrong with roof racks? I use mine all the time...about every other weekend in the winter for skiing, every summer camping trip, any road trip that I take my dogs on . So I’m a “fucking instagram overlanding douchebro” in your eyes because....I like to go outside, and I don’t take the rack off before driving to work on Monday morning?

As I said to HPFP , if I were springing for this special edition Land Cruiser, sure it might be nice to have something fancier, but that would arguably be more poseur-ish than a basic Yakima setup (a ta ke you might agree with). I guess I would say they just shouldn’t put a rack on it at all and let the buyer add the one they like if they want.

I have yamkia stuff on both my vehicles, its fine. only fine. The A1 towers and roundbars are plenty stout and functional, but the basket is pretty crappy IMO. its heavy, cheap and not very volume efficient. i.e. its a large basket for a small amount of space. I borrowed one on the maze trip and realized it wasn’t an advantage for carrying gear over just the round bars, and it made me less fuel efficient, more top heavy and taller.

If you want to put soft light stuff on your roof, get a box, if you want to put hard heavy stuff on your roof, strap it to the bars.

I agree there are certainly better baskets/single-purpose racks out there. I’m not sure anybody else has matched the interchangeability, like with the matching roundbars on top of the basket so you can basically stack rack attachments as needed. I also disagree that it’s not an advantage over the bars, because it handles a mixture of sizes of stuff better. If I were a more serious overlander like you, rather than a weekend camper/skiier, I can imagine investing in something nicer.

ETA: I really like the badges though.

There are plenty of people out there that can supply you with round bar cross compatibility if thats important . That being said there are WAY more versatile rack systems than round bars. Anything with L track for example. I will give you that it’ s cheap and easy and functional, but its place on a special edition smacks of laziness.

Usually a phrase as ridiculous as “fucking instagram overlanding douchebro safari rack” is not meant as a serious-minded critique.

A roof rack repulsiveness ranking, from least to most:

OE roof rack on a large 2-box vehicle that typically is used to haul a bunch of crap , with or without aftermarket accessories as needed to accomplish a certain function.

Safari baskets on the above type vehicle, done for style.

Safari baskets on everything else.

The must’ve got a bulk discount on those Yakima racks, since they’re on the Venture Edition 4Runner, too. What can they put em on next?

Since “it’s cheap and easy and functional” was my entire point, I’ll take it. And I agree with your conclusion, mostly because cheap.

Can we make an exception to #3 for safari baskets on ridiculous contraptions like this thing , if it had one ? Like, if the style is over the top enough, it’s cool again. This is a dangerous road to go down , I admit (see, e.g., every fucking stanced VW with a fake suitcase on the roof).

I would allow it on the monster truck 240Z but run of the mill stanced VWs make me want to punch people.

Nice badges, but out of place on that vehicle, at least in the chosen location on that vehicle... In my opinion...
